Applying Text Options in WordArt

Summary: An overview of the different options that WordArt allows you to apply to your text. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003.)

WordArt is a program that allows you to treat text as a graphic. You can use the program to add special effects and flourishes to text and then insert the text in your document. Several of the tools on the WordArt toolbar allow you to modify how your text is treated by the program. The three major tools that control this are as follows:

  • WordArt Same Letter Heights. Used to force (as it states) all characters to be the same height. This is done by exaggerating the height of lowercase letters.
  • WordArt Vertical Text. Changes the orientation of text. One mouse click results in text being "stacked," and another click returns it to normal.
  • WordArt Character Spacing. Allows you to adjust spacing between letters.

Tip #689 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003
