Inserting Only Part of a File

Summary: You can easily insert one document within another document. What you may not know is that you can limit which part of a document you actually insert. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, Word 2003, and Word 2007.)

You probably already know that Word allows you to insert a file into your document. You may not know, however, that you can insert a portion of a file, if desired. This is done in the following manner:

  1. Position the insertion point where you want the document inserted.
  2. Choose File from the Insert menu. Word displays the Insert File dialog box. (To display the Insert File dialog box in Word 2007, click the Insert tab of the ribbon, click the down-arrow at the right of the Object tool within the Text group, and then choose Text from File.)
  3. Specify a filename for the document you want inserted.
  4. If you are using Word 2000 or later, click on the Range button. Word displays the Set Range dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  5. In the Range box, indicate a bookmark name assigned to the text you want inserted. This must be an existing bookmark name in the file you are inserting.
  6. Click on OK.

Tip #1853 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003 | 2007
