Renaming a Toolbar

Summary: Word allows you to create custom toolbars that can speed how you work with various tools and macros. When you first create a toolbar, you are required to name it. If you later want to rename it, you’ll appreciate the information in this tip. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003.)

Word allows you to create your own custom toolbars, as described in other issues of WordTips. Once created, you may want to rename one of your custom toolbars to more accurately reflect its purpose. You cannot rename the built-in toolbars used by Word. If you want to rename one of your custom toolbars, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Customize from the Tools menu. Word displays the Customize dialog box.
  2. Make sure the Toolbars tab is selected. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  3. From the list of available toolbars, select the toolbar you want to rename. If the toolbar can be renamed, the Rename button will become available.
  4. Click on the Rename button. The Rename Toolbar dialog box appears. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  5. Enter a new name for your toolbar.
  6. Click on OK to rename the toolbar. The name is updated in the list of available toolbars in the Customize dialog box.
  7. Click on Close.

Tip #1753 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003
