Determining Which Template is Attached to a Document
Summary: If you’ve opened a document in Word, that document has a template attached to it. This tip looks at what those templates do and shows you how you can figure out which template is actually attached to the document. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, Word 2003, and Word 2007.)
Every document has a template associated with it. Templates control things like which styles and macros are available to the document. A document can have only one template associated with it at a time, and you can change that template at any time you desire.
If you want to find out which template is attached to a document, you can do so by choosing Templates and Add-Ins from the Tools menu. (In Word 2007, display the Developer tab of the ribbon and then click on the Document Template option.) Word displays the Templates and Add-ins dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.) The field at the top of the dialog box indicates the name of the template associated with your document.
