Printing Field Codes

Summary: Fields are a powerful tool in Word. Normally you don’t see the field code behind the result, because in most instances it is only the result that you are interested in. You can, however, configure Word so that the field codes are actually printed. This is great if you want a printed record of what fields are actually used in the document. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003.)

If you use fields in your documents to any extent, you may want to print a copy of your document with field codes showing instead of field results. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Options from the Tools menu. Word displays the Options dialog box.
  2. Make sure the Print tab is selected. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  3. Make sure the Field Codes checkbox (in the Include with Document section) is selected.
  4. Click on OK.
  5. Print your document.

If you prefer, you can also make the setting change just before printing. Follow these steps:

  1. Display the Print dialog box by choosing Print from the File menu. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  2. Click the Options button. Word displays the Print tab from the Options dialog box.
  3. Make sure the Field Codes checkbox is selected.
  4. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.
  5. Make any other changes desired in the Print dialog box.
  6. Click OK to print your document.

Tip #996 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003

Great Idea! Word is a tool to get what you really want—printed output. This means you need to make sure that Word works as well as possible with your printer, whether it is sitting on your desk or in a room down the hall.
