Turning Off Document Protection

If you previously protected your document for change tracking, for comments, or for forms, then you will probably need to unprotect the document at some time so that you can make unrestricted changes. To unprotect your document, follow these steps if you are using a version of Word prior to Word 2007:

1. Choose Unprotect Document from the Tools menu. Word displays the Unprotect Document dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
2. Enter your password in the dialog box, providing you used one when first protecting the document.
3. Click on OK. The document is unprotected.

Finally, if you are using Word 2007, you should follow these steps:

1. Display the Review tab of the ribbon.
2. Click the Protect Document tool, at the right side of the ribbon. Word displays the task pane.
3. At the bottom of the task pane, click Stop Protection. Word displays the Unprotect Document dialog box.
4. Enter your password in the dialog box, providing you used one when first protecting the document.
5. Click on OK. The document is unprotected.
