Turning Off Automatic Captioning

Summary: If you previously set up Word to add automatic captions below document elements, you may want to turn it off. Here's how. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 6, Word 95, Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003.)

If you previously turned on the automatic captioning feature of Word, you can turn it off by following these steps:

  1. Choose the Caption option from the Insert menu. Word displays the Caption dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  2. Click on the AutoCaption button. Word displays the AutoCaption dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  3. Search through the list of objects, removing checkmarks from the ones with which you don't want Word to automatically use captions. For instance, if you were automatically adding captions to Word tables, you should clear the checkbox beside the Microsoft Word Table option.
  4. Click on OK.

Tip #892 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 6 | 95 | 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003

Take Control! Master the real power behind Word! Successfully master the secrets of powerful formatting and create documents that stand out from the rest. Best of all, you can create documents that are easy to maintain and quick to change.
