Removing All Comments

Summary: How to remove Word's comments from your document. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 6, Word 95, Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003.)

Word allows you to easily add comments to your documents. (In Word 6 and Word 95, comments were known as annotations.) There may come a time when you want to get rid of all of them. In order to do so, you can follow these steps:

  1. Choose Replace from the Edit menu, or press CTRL+H. Word displays the Find and Replace dialog box with the Replace tab selected for Word 97 or later. (Click here to see a related figure.) Word 6 or Word 95 will show the Replace dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  2. In the Find What box, enter ^a.
  3. Make sure the Replace With box is empty.
  4. Click on Replace All.

This should do the trick. In some cases, however, Word may be a bit touchy and not delete all the comments. (I am not sure why; it just is at times.) In this case, simply make sure that the Comment pane is open (Select Comments from the View menu) before doing the replace operation.

Tip #857 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 6 | 95 | 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003
