Changing Comment Bubble Colors

Summary: Want to change the color that Word uses for comments in your document? The extent of what you can change depends largely on your version of Word. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, Word 2003, and Word 2007.)

Lisa asked if there was a way to change the color used for the comment bubbles that appear when she inserts comments into a document.

How you change comment color depends on the version of Word you are using and exactly what you want to change. If you are using a version of Word that shows comments as balloons at the right side of the document, then you can change the comment color by choosing Tools | Options | Track Changes tab | Comments Color. (In Word 2007 you display the Review tab of the ribbon and, within the Tracking group, click Track Changes and choose Change Tracking Options.)

If you are viewing your document so that you only see comment indicators and that comments pop up when you hover the mouse pointer over the indicator, then you can only change the color of the pop-up by making a change in Windows. This is detailed in this WordTip:
