Importing to QuarkXPress

Summary: Guidance on how to transfer files from Word to QuarkXPress. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 6, Word 95, Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003.)

Word is often used as a "front end" for other programs. For instance, many people write and edit manuscripts in Word, and then import them into a publishing program, such as QuarkXPress. Unfortunately, transfers into other programs may not always go smoothly.

One way to implement the sharing of files among programs is through the use of import and export filters. For instance, Word uses import filters to allow it to read documents created in other word processing programs, such as WordPerfect. Likewise, QuarkXPress uses import filters to allow it to read information from a program such as Word.

If you are having problems loading Word documents into QuarkXPress, then chances are very good that you don't have the proper import filter loaded in the program. Quark makes several different import filters, each working with a different version of Word. Finding the filters at the Quark Web site can be a real pain, but you can follow these general steps:

  1. Visit the download page of the Quark Web site.
  2. Click on the Keyword radio button to indicate you want to search by keyword.
  3. In the Keywords field, enter "word filter" as your keywords. (Do not include the quote marks.)
  4. Click on Find.

That's it. You should shortly see a list of downloadable files that meet your criteria. If you scroll through the list (it is in alphabetic order by file name), you will find some files beginning with "MS Word." These are the import filters; select the one you want to download and use. Once you install it in Quark, you should be able to load Word documents with no problem.

Tip #562 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 6 | 95 | 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003
