Inserting a Bullet

Summary: Need to place a bullet in the middle of a sentence? There are a couple of easy ways you can do this, as described in this tip. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 6, Word 95, Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, Word 2003, and Word 2007.)

It is not unusual to create bulleted lists within a document. What if you want to place a bullet within the middle of a sentence, however? There are two ways you can do this in Word. First, you can follow these steps:

  1. Position the insertion point where you want the bullet to appear.
  2. Choose Symbol from the Insert menu. Word displays the Symbol dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.) To display the dialog box in Word 2007, display the Insert tab of the ribbon, click Symbol (in the Symbols group), and then click More Symbols.
  3. Use the Font drop-down list to select the font you want to use for the bullet.
  4. Double-click on the bullet character you want inserted.
  5. Click on Close.

Another option for inserting a bullet is to hold down the Alt key as you type 0183 on the numeric keypad. This inserts a small round bullet at the insertion point.

Tip #472 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 6 | 95 | 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003 | 2007
