Inserting a Picture in Your Document

Summary: Word allows you to insert quite a few different types of pictures in your document. Here's a quick overview of how it works. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 95, Word 97, and Word 2000.)

Word allows you to insert a wide range of picture (graphic) types in your documents. You can insert the following types, based on the version of Windows you are using:

Picture Type Extension Word 95 Word 97 Word 2000
Windows Bitmap BMP X X X
CorelDRAW CDR X X X

There are two ways to insert a picture in text. You can insert it directly in text, or you can insert it in a frame. To insert a picture directly in your text, follow these steps:

  1. Position the insertion point where you want the picture to be inserted.
  2. Choose Picture from the Insert menu, then choose From File. (If you are using Word 95, simply choose Picture from the Insert menu.)
  3. In the Files of Type field, select the type of graphics file you want to insert.
  4. Locate and choose a filename for the picture you want to insert.
  5. Click on OK.

Word inserts the picture in the text at the position you indicated by the insertion point. The picture will be inserted at its full size, or the size of the page margins, whichever is smaller.

Tip #391 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 95 | 97 | 2000
