Displaying Fields

Summary: Fields are used quite extensively in some documents. If you want to see where the fields are located, you’ll want to use one of the methods described in this tip. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003.)

Many of the tips provided in WordTips rely on the use of fields. Normally, Word hides the contents of fields, replacing them instead with their result (if they are the type of field that yields a result). If you want to see the contents of your fields, there are two ways you can do this:

  • Choose Field Codes from the View menu.
  • Press Shift+F9.

Either of these methods functions as a toggle. When you are through viewing the field contents, you can use either of these methods to again display the field results, if any.

Tip #385 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003
