Embedding TrueType Fonts in E-mails Composed in Word

Summary: When you use Word as your e-mail editor, it allows you to format the text of your e-mail messages using tools you are familiar with. Not all features relative to a document—such as embedding fonts—are available in the e-mail messages created with Word. This tip presents a way you can workaround this limitation. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003.)

Rob uses Outlook 2003 as his e-mail program and Word 2003 as his e-mail editor. He asked if it is possible to embed TrueType fonts in an e-mail message. Rob uses a TrueType handwriting font for his signature, and he would like to add this to outgoing e-mails.

You can embed TrueType fonts in Word documents by choosing Tools | Options | Save and selecting the Embed TrueType Fonts check box. This, however, won't affect e-mails, even if the e-mail message is composed in Word. The reason? Word is used only for editing the message, and the message is not sent as a Word document. (If the document isn't sent, then there is nothing in which to embed the TrueType font.)

In this situation, the best solution is to create a graphic that shows the handwritten signature, and then use that graphic in the signature for e-mail messages. Graphics can be sent as part of e-mail messages without any problem.

Tip #235 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003
